IBS SEVERITY SCORE SYSTEM
The Irritable Bowel Syndrome - Severity Scoring System (IBS-SSS) is a valuable and commonly used tool for assessing the severity of IBS symptoms in patients. It evaluates five key factors: severity of abdominal pain, frequency of abdominal pain, severity of bloating, dissatisfaction with bowel habits, and interference with life in general.
Interpreting your IBS-SSS score generally follows these guidelines:
- A score of less than 75 indicates that your IBS symptoms are considered mild. While you may experience some discomfort, these symptoms typically do not significantly interfere with your daily activities. Lifestyle modifications, stress management strategies, and over-the-counter medications may help manage these symptoms.
- A score between 75 and 175 suggests moderate severity. This means that you experience consistent and noticeable symptoms that may affect your daily life to some extent. It is advisable to consult with a healthcare professional for individualized advice and potentially prescription medications.
- A score above 175 represents severe IBS. At this stage, symptoms are likely to be very disruptive to your daily life. It is strongly recommended to seek medical advice, as more aggressive treatment options may be necessary to manage your symptoms.
Remember, if you have IBS, maintaining regular communication with your healthcare provider is essential for managing your condition effectively. IBS-SSS is a helpful tool, but it doesn't tell the whole story. Your healthcare provider will consider many other factors, including your overall health, diet, lifestyle, and personal preferences, when deciding on the most appropriate course of treatment. Always consult your healthcare provider if you have any concerns about your symptoms or if they worsen over time.
